7 Ways to Customize the Android TV Home Screen

Many people are not tech-savvy. I will definitely count myself in. So they do not have any idea when it comes to customizing their TV home screens or handling any other tech-related complexities. And before you start to call the rep if that is included in your Spectrum Cable TV package, stop! That has nothing to do with customization. You can do it yourself.

But in case you don’t know how, here are some ways by which you can customize your Android TV Home screen.

Select the Favorites

Customizing implies that everything possible is to your liking. So, to begin with, select your favorite apps. These can include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, your cable service providing company and much more. You might even end up installing a gazillion of those apps that you won’t be using on a daily basis. For example, many people download MX or VLC player to decorate their home screen.

It is up to your discretion if you want to clutter your home screen with unwanted apps or not. In my opinion, you should not. The rest is up to you. Thankfully, there exists a way to customize your favorite apps. The favorites will appear in the top row on your home screen. Thus, hiding the other unwanted ones.

You can choose to add both regular apps as well as games in your favorites. Scroll to the right-hand side of the apps row (to add the ones to your favorites). Click on the ‘plus’ icon and choose the ones that you want to add.

Recommended Content

When you scroll down your Android TV home screen, you will notice that some of the apps also suggest recommended content for you. It is purely upon your discretion if you wish for this information to be visible to you or not. Some apps even give you the liberty to have a look at other recommended channels that the apps suggest. You can choose to hide (or not hide) this information as well.

You can choose the channels and apps that should display the recommended options for you and the ones that shouldn’t.

Play Next Channel

You can even choose to customize the ‘Play Next channel’ tab. If you peek into the row below the ‘favorites’ on the screen, you will find the ‘Play Next’ option. This feature sources the content from across the apps and channels to play the next video that you are most likely to enjoy.

You can choose which apps can send content to ‘Play Next’ channel. You can do so in very easy steps:

  • Scroll to the bottom of your home screen.
  • Select the ‘Customize Channels’ tab.
  • Click the ‘Customize Your Play Next Channel.’
  • Select the toggles of the apps that you want to include to this list.

Create Home Screen Shortcuts

You can choose to do so for sideloaded apps. One of the frustrating features of the Android home screen is that the sideloaded apps do not appear in the list where all the apps appear. This means that you have a hard time when adding them to your favorites. Because technically you cannot as you cannot view or see them.

However, you can manage this. But you need to download the TV App Repo before you can proceed.

Change Your Wallpaper

Perhaps the most basic and popular way of customizing almost any screen of a device is by changing the wallpaper. This is a reflection of who you are as a person. Or what are your likes or dislikes? Some people prefer to put their own face-up as wallpaper. While others find solace in displaying a picture of a place that looks serene and calm. To each his own choice.

Reorder App and Game Tiles

You can also change the order of the tiles that show on your home screen. Everyone has his own preference. Some people might like the game tabs to appear first while others may give preference to the app tiles. There are several ways to go about it. The most common way of reordering involves the following steps:

  • Go to ‘Settings.’
  • Click ‘Preferences.’
  • Choose ‘Home Screen.’
  • Go to ‘Apps.’

And from there you can select the new order for your home screen by selecting Reorder Apps or Reorder Games.

Use an Alternative Launcher

You might not know this, but you can also install a new Android TV launcher. This will give your home screen a completely new and different look. Once done, you can choose to watch Netflix or YouTube on your TV or even play games. All you need is access to Spectrum triple play or the likely packages that many internet providers are offering.
